CE Requirements and Rules
Ohio requires 36 hours of CE per biennium, of which 1.5 hours must be on the topic of ethics and/or professionalism.
Ohio licensees who reside AND practice in Ohio must earn at least 24 hours of CE in Ohio. The remaining required 12 hours of CE may be earned within the state of Ohio, outside the state of Ohio, or via supervised self instruction. The required 1.5 hours of CE on the topic of ethics and/or professionalism may be earned within the state of Ohio, outside of Ohio, or via supervised self instruction. Ohio licensees who reside AND practice outside of Ohio may earn all required 36 hours of CE, including the 1.5 hours on the topic of ethics and/or professionalism, within the state of Ohio, outside of Ohio, or via supervised self instruction.
The information below applies to sponsors of CE programs held within the state of Ohio. For programs held outside of Ohio or via supervised self instruction, please scroll down to Programs Held Outside of Ohio and Via Supervised Self Instruction.
Any program offered within the state of Ohio for CE credit must be sponsored by a Board-Approved CE Sponsor (listed below). If your entity is not on this list, your programs will not be accepted for CE credit.
Programs offered outside Ohio and via supervised self instruction do not require approval or registration with the Board. Do not submit registration forms for these programs.
Requirements for Board-Approved CE Sponsors
Requirements for Board-Approved CE Sponsors: Your entity must be a non-profit association registered with Ohio Secretary of State, or an accredited academic health institution or hospital. You must submit a letter requesting Board approval and include an attestment that all programs offered for Ohio CE credit will comply with the requirements outlined in Board Rule 4734-7-02. (Please pay particular attention to the requirements outlined in paragraph (F). Your request must include proof of non-profit status or accreditation, as applicable. Board-approved chiropractic colleges are automatically deemed “Ohio Board-Approved CE Sponsor.”
Once your entity is deemed “Ohio Board-Approved CE Sponsor” you will simply register your programs with the Board office by completing a Registration Form. No other applications or forms are required. Programs must be registered at least 30 days prior to the date of the program and a list of all attendees for each program must be submitted to the Board office within 30 days of completion of the program.
Programs offered for chiropractic CE must be comprised of one or more of the following subjects: Clinical diagnosis and examination procedures; diagnostic imaging; neurology; nutrition; public health, hygiene, sanitation; manipulation and adjusting procedures; physiological therapeutics; orthopedics; emergency procedures; principles and practice; philosophy; laboratory procedures; anatomy; physiology; rehabilitative procedures/exercise; ethics/boundaries; staff development and training; documentation; risk management; ethics/professionalism; laws and rules of the board; and other subjects related to the practice of chiropractic as deemed appropriate by the Board.
Programs offered for acupuncture CE must enhance acupuncture professional competency.
All program publication materials pertaining to courses offered for CE credit shall include:
- Program title;
- Description of program content;
- Description of teaching method;
- Names of all instructors and their qualifications;
- Location, date, time, cost and contact information for registration;
- Refund and cancellation policy;
- Disclosure of any connection between the provider and/or instructor of any commercial relationships and/or any external entity giving financial support to the program;
- Number of credit hours offered.
- The term “Ohio board-approved CE sponsor.”
Important Notes
Programs may be held for any length of time and will be granted credit on an hour for hour basis (ie, a program consisting of 60 minutes of instruction would be granted 1 hour of CE credit).
Instructors who will demonstrate techniques or procedures on program participants are no longer required to obtain a temporary license so long as the instructor:
- possesses valid liability coverage at the time of demonstration;
- fully explains the technique or procedure to the participant;
- discloses any potential risks, and obtains written informed consent prior to the demonstration.
It is the CE sponsor’s responsibility to ensure that the instructor is qualified to demonstrate the technique or procedure and possesses valid liability coverage at the time of demonstration. No instructor shall demonstrate any technique or procedure on a program participant without the full knowledge and consent of the board-approved CE sponsor.
Some entities may hold programs in Ohio that are NOT for CE credit. If so, the term “Ohio Board-Approved CE Sponsor,” “Board-Approved CE Sponsor” or any other term or statement that could mislead a licensee to believe the program may be attended for license renewal credit shall NOT be included on any promotional materials for the program(s).
COMPLIANCE
Please refer to Board Rule 4734-7-02 for full requirements for programs held within the state of Ohio. Failure to abide by these requirements could result in revocation of your sponsorship status.
Programs Held Outside of Ohio and Via Supervised Self Instruction

Supervised self instruction is defined as: Audio/video or internet programs that offer participant feedback and interaction with instructors and a mechanism for assessing participant mastery of the subject matter of the program.
Requirements for CE held outside of Ohio and for programs held via supervised self instruction: No formal approval by the Board is necessary. Licensees who earn CE credit outside of Ohio or via supervised self instruction must earn said credit through a board-approved chiropractic educational institution, non-profit association, accredited academic health institution, or hospital. It is the licensee’s responsibility to ensure programs are sponsored by one of these entities and that the topic is acceptable, as listed below:
