Continuing Education Requirements and Seminar List

Each licensee Must earn 24 hours of continuing education each year. Continuing education may be obtained from the following categories:

Category 1: A rigorous clinical or core curriculum program that includes an assessment of each participant's knowledge gained from the program. These programs are classroom or clinical settings and must be held within the state of Ohio. A minimum of 12 hours must be completed in category 1and/or 2. All of the 24 hours of required CE credit may be earned in category 1 and/or 2. These programs must be approved by the Board.

Category  2:  A rigorous clinical or core curriculum program. These programs are classroom or clinical settings and must be held within the state of Ohio. A minimum of 12 hours must be completed in category 1and/or 2. All of the 24 hours of required CE credit may be earned in category 1 and/or 2. These programs must be approved by the Board.

Category 3:  A program that is healthcare related and enhances the professional competency of a chiropractic physician. These programs may be completed via: electronic educational programs, journals or publications or seminar/conferences. These programs may or may not be held within the state of Ohio. A maximum of 12 hours of CE credit may be earned in category 3. These programs do not require the Board's prior approval.

*Please note that category 1 and 2 programs must consist of a mimimum of forty-five minutes per hour of instruction. Some programs have been approved for 10 or 11 hours but will fulfill the 12 hour requirement since they are 60 minute hours of instruction.

Category 3 continuing education programs are not pre-approved by the Board. It is the doctor's responsibility to determine if a program meets the criteria for category 3. Category 3 programs must be healthcare related and enhance professional competency;

Category 3 programs may be earned via the internet, videos, journals and publications, or by attending a seminar or conference in or out of state.

All continuing education must be sponsored by a board-approved chiropractic educational organization, a non-profit chiropractic assocation registered with the state of Ohio secretary of state, or an accredited academic health institution or hospital;


Every licensee must earn 24 hours of continuing education each calendar year.
  • A minimum of 12 hours must be earned in category 1 and/or 2.
  • A maximum of 12 hours may be earned in category 3.
  • All of the required 24 hours of continuing education may be earned in categories 1 and/or 2.

Special Circumstances

  • Licensees who receive their initial license to practice chiropractic the same year they were awarded their doctor of chiropractic degree are not required to meet the C.E. requirements for the remainder of that calendar year.

  • Licensees acting as associate examiners for the NBCE may receive a maximum of 24 hours per year of continuing education credit in category 2.

  • Licensees teaching board-approved C.E. programs may be granted the number of hours in the category they teach. Such requests for approval must be submitted to the board in writing no less than thirty days prior to the date of the program. Subsequent years' license renewal requirements shall not be met in whole or in part by instruction of the same course.

  • Licensees who hold a current Ohio license, but do not reside or practice in Ohio, may achieve all of their C.E. credit outside of the state of Ohio. All C.E. credit achieved must comply with the requirements of the Board.

  • A waiver, extension or reduction of C.E. hours may be granted to those licensees who establish that an illness, disability, or other good cause shown, affected a reasonable opportunity that precluded them from participating in C.E. activities. All requests for a waiver, extension or reduction of C.E. hours must be made to the board in writing no less than thirty days prior to the expiration of the license.

Continuing Education Audit

  • The board will select renewal applications for audit to verify that all C.E. requirements you attested to on your license renewal application were earned.

  • If your application is selected for audit, you must submit documentation of the C.E. you attested to on your license renewal application within thirty days from the date of notification.

  • Licensees shall not destroy, alter, or otherwise make unavailable documentation of C.E. and shall produce such documentation upon demand.

  • Failure to maintain C.E. records rebuts the presumption that the required C.E. hours were met.

  • Falsifying C.E. records or failure to maintain C.E. records could result in discipline and/or a fine up to $2,500.
